SHORTBREAD HOUSE is a small, family run bakery based in Scotland’s historic capital city of Edinburgh.
Anthony Laing and his wife Fiona acquired the business in 1989. Since then, it has grown from a small customer base in Scotland to having customers throughout the UK and abroad. Anthony comes from a family with a strong baking tradition. His father is Lord Laing who was chairman of United Biscuits until his retirement.
Shortbread House does not aspire to becoming a large conglomerate, preferring to concentrate on a niche market where quality, rather than quantity, is emphasised. We do not supply supermarkets and our customer base is predominantly the independent retail trade such as delicatessens, garden centres and department stores such as Fortnum & Mason, John Lewis and Harvey Nichols. Our products are popular because they are genuinely made by hand, so their taste, texture and appearance are quite different from the mass produced brands.
We employ a small team of skilled bakers and use the very best quality ingredients. We make the products to order and do not use distributors in the UK to ensure you receive the products as fresh as possible.

Our range includes the following flavours of shortbread:
Original Recipe shortbread;
Chocolate Chip shortbread, which is made with the finest rich, dark chocolate;
Chocolate & Orange shortbread, made with the same rich dark chocolate and natural orange oil;
Stem Ginger shortbread, which is delicately flavoured with delicious pieces of the best Australian stem ginger;
Festive shortbread, which combines traditional shortbread with a ‘mincemeat’ of seasonal fruits and fine citrus peel.
We also make Sweet Oatie Biscuits – plain or with chocolate chips. The Sweet Oatie biscuit is made from a traditional Scottish recipe but is a sweet, tea-time biscuit, not to be confused with Oatcakes. “Oaties”, as we call them, have a delicious, crumbly texture and are made with health-enhancing Scottish rolled oats, combined with the subtle addition of syrup and coconut.
We also make a wonderful Dundee Cake, made with generous quantities of vine fruits and decorated with almonds.
The packaging used by Shortbread House is distinctive. We use mainly dark blue or rich red backgrounds decorated with gold thistles, Scotland’s national floral emblem.
